Improving kayak drawings
Improve your kayak drawings by adding a little speed for the same stability
Before you set your kayak into production, be it a one time strip-built design you have purchased and will build yourself or a professional design that will go into mass production, it could be worthwhile to check whether the hull can get somewhat more speed without sacrificing stability.
What to think about
We define stability as the righting moment at both 5 and 30 degrees of edging, so that neither the initial nor the secondary stability should be compromised. You may choose other angles, or choosing to keep only the primary or the secondary stability. A kayak version for more experienced paddlers could sacrifice some secondary stability, since this while keeping you from capsizing in moderate waves, also makes it more difficult to counter the influence from the waves with upper body movements and the paddle. Using only one angle would make the process faster and cheaper.
You will here have the chance to make some modifications to your original drawings, by adding some length, changing the width somewhat or making room for more storage. No extra cost for this.
Another thing to think about is what impression you might like the kayak to have. If you have drawings for a kayak which is concave by the ends and want to preserve this impression of cutting through the waves, we might build in constraints preserving the concavity (most probably it would be preserved anyway, since our method does not make large alterations of the kayak).
A comprehensive report and new drawings are delivered. We will expect some payment for the service, different for strip-builders and professional designers:
Improving hull for strip-builders
For strip builders we expect NOK 500 if the drawings can be delivered electronically and NOK 1000 if the drawings are delivered on paper and new drawings must be sent back on paper. This could nearly double your cost for drawings. However, the cost of drawings is not the heaviest burden on your money-time budget. We could also deliver plywood sections, which would save some building time. The cost for this has not been evaluated yet. It is also possible to deliver sections and stand for building the kayak using the technique we are using for building Turøy, see the web pages for Turøy and strip building.
Improving hull for professional designers
For professional designers, either for the strip-building market or for companies that do mass production, we deliver optimized drawings for the first model for free, to prove what we can do, and that it is useful. For later models the price is discussable.
